Bizarrely, the response that you are receiving is apparently a 
CONNECT_REQUEST.  Possibly the packet is somehow being looped back, so we're 
actually seeing our own outbound packet.

If you maximise logging on the server side, is there any indication in the 
kernel logs that the connection request is received?
